Zillow is dedicated to transforming home buying, selling, and financing. The Zillow Home Loans (ZHL) Growth and Experience team is at the forefront of creating customer-centric experiences and seamless agent integrations to empower home buyers to understand affordability and secure home loans for their purchases. Our team is focused on simplifying the complex home buying journey, guiding buyers on affordability within the Zillow Shopping experience, and assisting them in taking the next steps towards their dream home. We equip our agent partners with tools to collaborate effectively with our loan officers, facilitating a seamless experience for our customers.

The team is composed of back end, web, iOS, Android, and quality engineers, developing solutions for multiple platforms across the customer and agent journey. The latest features include BuyAbility™ (which helps customers understand their affordability), a first party digital pre-approval process, and integrations with Follow Up Boss. ZHL is one of the big bets for Zillow and there are a lot of opportunities to help the vast Zillow audience to get the financing they need for the home they love.

About the role

As a Principal Engineer at Zillow Home Loans, you will play a pivotal role reporting to the Sr. Director of Engineering. Working closely with product managers, stakeholders, and engineering teams, you will be instrumental in crafting a comprehensive and compelling customer experience. This role offers high visibility within the company and the Senior Leadership Team, providing you with the opportunity to shape the future of financing experiences for our customers.

You will be peers with amazing agile experts managing multi-platform teams to shape the future of the experience for customers looking to finance their purchases. You will also:

• Collaborate with various ZHL teams to achieve shared goals, providing guidance and support to ensure successful project outcomes.

• Identify system challenges and opportunities, propose innovative solutions, and drive their execution.

• Lead evolutionary design and architecture by evolving system boundaries and integrations.

• Apply patterns that support effective platform development, especially for high throughput and low latency requirements.

• Maintain a high standard of quality and operability to sustain velocity as the system scales.

• Represent the ZHL team in technical discussions during company-wide initiatives.

• Foster cross-functional relationships to promote collaboration and alignment on project objectives.

• Mentor senior engineers and guide tech leadership groups to facilitate continuous growth and development.

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $186,300.00 - $297,700.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC and may not be applicable to other locations.In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

• Minimum of 7 years of software development experience encompassing backend and frontend technologies.

• Demonstrated expertise in building multi-platform experiences and evolving team contracts and data models.

• Proficient in iterative software development, design, and architecture.

• Self-motivated with the ability to excel in dynamic environments with minimal supervision.

• Strong advocate for education, training, coaching, and mentoring to foster team development.

• Collaborative working style.

• Familiarity with GraphQL is considered an advantage.

• Experience in regulated industries being a plus.
