The Fraud Investigations team is part of Wealthsimple’s Security & Risk CXO Group which falls under the Client Experience Operations team. Wealthsimple’s Security & Risk Group encompasses both investigations and operational aspects of fraud: prevention, detection, investigation and client experience. The team plays a crucial role in safeguarding our clients and maintaining trust in Wealthsimple’s services.
The Investigator will be responsible for evaluating incidents of suspected financial crime committed against Wealthsimple and its customers and make recommendations about future measures. The Investigator will proactively identify potential financial crime through in-depth analysis, and effectively respond to reported claims of financial crime.
*This is a 6 month fixed-term position

  • Review and investigate alerts related to suspicious cheques and cheque fraud activities, as well as reviews related to digital banking fraud (EMTs, Wires, Bill Payment alerts)
  • Conduct comprehensive cheque authentication and verification processes
  • Manage team inbox and coordinate external outreach to Other Financial Institutions (OFIs)
  • Communicate directly with banks and credit unions, insurance companies, and businesses to confirm cheque validity and facilitate verification processes
  • Make critical decisions regarding cheque holds, processing delays, and risk mitigation measures
  • Lead funds recovery efforts and coordinate with financial institutions on hold procedures
  • Build and maintain industry contact networks across Canadian banks and credit unions
  • Utilize internal systems and tools for documenting cases and maintaining detailed investigation records
  • Manage multiple cases simultaneously while maintaining Service Level Agreements and closure timeframes

Skills we are looking for:

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years' experience in cheque authentication, cheque verification, or cheque fraud investigation within a Canadian financial institution
  • Back office alert management experience, particularly with cheque-related fraud detection systems
  • Proven track record of working with Canadian banks, credit unions, or Other Financial Institutions (OFIs)
  • Knowledge of Payments Canada rules, regulations, and payment processing frameworks (strong asset)
  • Experience with signing authority responsibilities and cheque authorization processes
  • Established industry contacts and relationships within the Canadian banking sector
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to detect patterns and anomalies in cheque transactions
  • Excellent communication skills for liaising with external financial institutions and internal stakeholders
  • High attention to detail and ability to make sound decisions under pressure
  • Resourceful, persistent, and able to thrive in a fast-paced fintech environment
