The Role
We are looking to grow our Consumer Products team to help amplify member joy and strengthen brand affinity around the Netflix brand and our beloved titles. We do this by developing creative and relevant ways for our members and fans to interact with Netflix off-screen.
Consumer products drive meaningful show awareness and buzz with product stories that allow fans to express their love for our brand and titles, while also generating meaningful revenue. Ideally, our products connect members to our content, and to each other, by bringing their favorite stories to life.
This role is responsible for creating and executing Netflix's consumer products retail strategy for JAPAN across multiple categories by seamlessly managing retailer relationships in key markets while staying highly aligned with the regional commercial and marketing teams. This position will report to the Director of Consumer Products, JAPAN and will be based in Tokyo or .
The role requires a results-driven, entrepreneurial leader with a strong background in business development, commercial strategy, and team leadership. The person should be proactive and relationship-oriented, capable of building and scaling a business by bringing Netflix's intellectual properties (IPs) to life for fans.
Responsibilities
Japan’s Retail Strategy: Architect and own the long-term retail growth strategy for JAPAN, aligning category priorities and franchise goals to maximize Netflix’s brand footprint.
DTR Partnership Management: Identify, secure, and manage high-impact Direct-To-Retail (DTR) partnerships with major retailers to ensure a permanent and premium brand presence across key markets.
Channel Optimization: Develop a comprehensive Japan Channel Management Strategy, partnering with regional and country leads to identify and invest in high-growth retail channels.
Global-to-Local Execution: Lead the Local execution for global/Regional partners, translating global concepts into localized retail placements and ensuring robust marketing support across Japan.
Business Intelligence & Analysis: Drive business growth through rigorous category analysis, identifying key revenue drivers and scaling opportunities throughout the fiscal year.
Cross-Functional Leadership: Drive holistic alignment from inception to completion by leading internal squads across Commercial, Marketing, and Legal teams.
Innovation & Trends: Apply deep retail account expertise and consumer insights to develop "break-frame" retail solutions that are both innovative and operationally executable.
Best Practice Exchange: Systematically capture and leverage retail best practices from other global regions (UCAN, LATAM, EMEA and APAC) to elevate local market performance.
Performance Tracking: Regularly analyze retail results and KPIs, delivering actionable insights to the broader Consumer Products team to drive continuous improvement.
What we are looking for:
10+ years of experience in the retail industry with globally renowned brands (Toys, CE, FMCG) or major content IPs, with a proven track record of scaling local businesses.
Extensive experience owning high-level relationships with major Japan retailers across buying, marketing, and category management; you have a "black book" of contacts and deep credibility in the industry.
Deep expertise across diverse retail tiers, including Mass-market, CVS, Specialty, and E-commerce, with a sophisticated understanding of omnichannel strategies and operational marketing.
Expert-level ability to analyze performance data and translate complex metrics into actionable growth strategies that drive incremental revenue.
Mastery in navigating matrixed organizations, with the ability to "connect the dots" between disparate global and local stakeholders to achieve unified business outcomes.
Proven ability to manage multiple product launches or retail campaigns simultaneously, maintaining precision and strategic alignment under tight deadlines.
An entrepreneurial, "pro-change" mindset with the ability to adapt at speed and thrive in a high-autonomy, fast-paced environment.
A deep-seated passion for entertainment and storytelling, with the ability to translate "fan joy" into tangible retail experiences.
Japanese and English proficiency is critical, with the ability to present complex strategies to global executives and local partners with equal clarity.
Experience managing Global Master Toy or Hardlines business is a plus.
Experience managing wholesalers for major retails is a plus.
