Netflix is one of the world's leading entertainment services, with over 300 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.

The Role

AI is dramatically lowering the cost of generating UI, which means Netflix will see an explosion of new interfaces across internal tools. Without strong system guardrails, this creates growing risks in UX consistency, accessibility and product coherence. Hawkins Professional, as the design system for enterprise tooling at Netflix, is uniquely positioned to address this.

We’re looking for a technical design leader who can act as the connective tissue between design logic, system architecture, tooling, and AI capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead efforts to ensure all components meet Hawkins quality standards, including accessibility, motion, and theming, and are built to scale effectively.

  • Own comprehensive, machine‑readable system knowledge (component docs, usage rules, accessibility, tokens, patterns) and keep it production‑ready in partnership with design and engineering.

  • Partner with engineering to translate high‑level design guidance into explicit, structured logic (rules, decision trees, contracts) that AI agents and tools can safely consume to generate UI and usable code.

  • Define, document, and evolve the design system’s core primitives (layout, interaction, accessibility) and component APIs to keep implementations consistent, testable, and easy to adopt.

  • Partner on the design and maintenance of AI‑assisted design tooling (agents, copilots, MCP integrations) that recommend components, generate system‑compliant layouts/tokens, and automate design QA in Figma and related tools.

  • Partner with engineers to build and integrate automated refactoring, migration, and system‑aware copilot tools into developer workflows (CI/CD, code review, IDEs) to propagate system changes with minimal disruption.

  • Develop design testing frameworks and guardrails to ensure both human‑ and AI‑generated usage of the system remains accessible, performant, and on‑brand across domains.

  • Expose the system through component APIs, schemas, and LLM‑optimized knowledge bases (metadata, examples, component “recipes”) so AI and product teams can reliably discover and apply system capabilities.

  • Monitor design system health (adoption, divergence, duplication, defects, migration effort), including AI usage patterns, and drive iterative improvements based on these signals.

  • Champion system thinking and AI‑driven scalability across the organization, aligning design, engineering, and AI strategies and staying current with emerging genAI practices.

  • Operate at the intersection of engineering and design, integrating aesthetic, functional, and technical considerations into cohesive solutions

Qualifications

At Netflix, all roles are expected to exemplify the values outlined in our culture. Below are some specific behaviors, experiences, and skills to be successful in this role.

  • 5-8+ years of experience in system design, with a proven track record of delivering impactful design system solutions at scale.

  • A visionary mindset, capable of setting and articulating a clear vision for design systems while influencing teams and stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Deep expertise in systems thinking, with the ability to balance high-level strategy with detailed execution.

  • Strong communication and storytelling skills, with a talent for influencing and inspiring stakeholders across disciplines.

  • Strong interaction and visual design skills focused on components and patterns, demonstrated through a portfolio of deep system design experience.

  • Production experience with React, modern JS/TS, and CSS (including utility frameworks).

  • Experience working with a mature design system or component library (beyond initial greenfield creation).

  • Ability to work fluently across Figma and code, reasoning about the mapping between them over time.

  • Familiarity with generative AI concepts and a strong interest in shaping how agents and LLM‑powered tools consume and apply a design system in real products.

Does this sound interesting but overwhelming?
