The Opportunity

We are seeking a proven and experienced Director of Content Protection to lead our efforts in combatting online piracy and protecting our world-class entertainment content. In this role, you will lead a team of content protection professionals and serve as Netflix’s primary liaison for content protection enforcement. You will collaborate with industry peers and coalition groups as well as global, regional and local law enforcement agencies. These activities will include working with commercial stakeholders and digital intermediaries, guiding trade industry based civil litigation and criminal referrals, and supporting Government Affairs actions related to content protection.

In this role, you will work closely with the broader IP legal team and cross functional stakeholders including Content, IP Enforcement, Marketing, and Content Security teams to innovate and execute on content protection strategies to most effectively support our slate of content.

The ideal candidate will have deep experience running a global notice and takedown program, analyzing piracy trends, and managing a high performing team. They will also have broad experience with industry alliance led content protection initiatives and experience working with online platforms (e.g., YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Google, etc.).

This role reports into the Sr. Director of Intellectual Property and is located in Los Angeles.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive global content protection strategy, focused on mitigating the impacts of post-release digital online piracy

  • Lead and develop a global team of high performing content protection professionals

  • Collaborate closely with internal cross-functional teams, including business stakeholders, litigation, content security, marketing, publicity, and government affairs

  • Work externally with our industry coalitions, law enforcement, and outside counsel to lead our anti-piracy criminal referrals and civil litigation

  • Manage our online enforcement program, focusing on vendor management for online scanning and takedown efforts

  • Lead on our strategy for intermediary engagement, both bi-laterally and through industry-wide efforts

  • Leverage internal and external content protection data and research to drive strategy and optimize outcomes

  • Provide expert guidance and training to internal teams and external partners on best practices for content protection

  • Support content security and incident response teams in mitigating pre-release piracy and leak investigations and response

Qualifications

  • J.D. and membership in good standing in at least one state bar

  • At least 10 years of experience in Content Protection, IP litigation, or a related role within the entertainment industry, including 3+ years of experience in Content Protection within the entertainment industry

  • Strong knowledge and experience working with third party digital rights management platforms (e.g. YouTube, Meta, TikTok)

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in building, managing, mentoring and inspiring teams

  • Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to simplify complex content protection and intellectual property matters and communicate with respective audiences

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly assess and respond to urgent matters

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the film and television industry including working with senior leadership

  • Experience with IP enforcement for consumer products, music, experiences and games is a plus

Our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $280,000 - $960,000.
