Counsel - Intellectual Property and Business & Legal Affairs (Spain & Portugal)
Netflix
Netflix is one of the world's leading entertainment services, with over 300 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.
Our global efforts have brought Netflix's service and award-winning Originals programming to viewers all over the world and we are excited to bring even more of our original and acquisition programming to our viewers everywhere. With a vibrant production hub in Madrid and highly successful Spanish and Portuguese films and series such as “La Sociedad de la Nieve”, “La Casa de Papel” or “Rabo de Peixe”, Netflix seeks an experienced attorney to join Netflix’s Spain and Portugal initiative.
Based in our Madrid office, the role is on the Spain and Portugal business and legal affairs team and will be focused on supporting the Netflix service in Spain and the slate of Netflix original and licensed content produced in Spanish and Portuguese languages.
The candidate will be responsible for:
advising film and television productions and executives on all matters related to intellectual property issues, including chain of title review, title and production clearance, trademark & IP enforcement, defamation and similar content risks, as well as claim defense; and
structuring, drafting and negotiating contracts for the development, production and/or acquisition of local content, including agreements for rights acquisition, production agreements, talent agreements, etc.
This role will closely collaborate with the creative, production, marketing and business and legal teams that create and promote Netflix’s great content.
As a successful candidate, your intellectual property experience shall enable you to work across any situation that may be encountered related to a production. You aren’t phased by the last minute surprises that inevitably arise when shooting a film, series or documentary. You can navigate any legal risk situations while allowing your studio colleagues to fulfill their creative and business goals. You understand the dynamics among showrunners, executive producers, line producers, production departments, marketing and content creative teams, and know when and how to align the appropriate teams when any legal issues arise. You have experience evaluating risk with imperfect information and have the confidence to make quick decisions. You will assist in scaling our Spanish and Portuguese language content operations, working alongside creative and production partners to tackle intellectual property issues and structure content related deals. In doing so, you will be responsible for understanding the legal landscape and production customs and for executing on Netflix’s strategy as necessary to develop and produce local content for our global streaming platform. You will be involved in negotiating production deals for programming either with third-party local partners or directly with talent and representatives, as well as overseeing business and legal affairs and IP-related matters during production.
This is an opportunity to shape the future of entertainment. The successful candidate will love working in an environment where passion, innovation and curiosity are mandates. That candidate will also thrive in an environment that values thoughtful efficiency over process.
The role will report to the Senior Director of Business & Legal Affairs in Madrid.
