About the Team

The Database and Storage Fundamentals team is part of the Infrastructure and Data stream. We work at the rendezvous point of code and infrastructure. We advise teams on database architecture and design, optimizing for data access patterns. We are responsible for efficient sharding and routing, evaluation of new database and storage technologies, research into driving more efficiency and performance through the data and storage layers.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and strategic Senior Software Engineer with database experience (SQL and NoSQL) to join the team that leads design, optimization, and overall reliability of our mission-critical stateful systems. You will shape technical direction and infrastructure strategy, mentor other engineers as you ensure the exceptional performance, security, and scalability of our data assets. You will work on foundational pieces of database platform architecture, such as schema design, sharding, regional data residency, encryption and observability.

What you’ll do

  • Backend application development focused on supporting databases for mission-critical applications
  • Contribute to design of highly scalable and resilient future-proof stateful systems that can handle large volumes of data and support critical applications
  • Proactively identify and resolve design issues through reviews
  • Contribute to establishing and maintaining database development standards
  • Perform performance analysis and tuning
  • Develop and maintain robust strategies for high availability and disaster recovery, ensuring minimal downtime and safeguarding critical data
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers, fostering their growth while establishing best practices across the database team
  • Participate in incident resolution and root cause analysis process as needed
  • Automate processes and document procedures to enhance efficiency
  • Participate in on-call rotation as necessary

What you’ll need

  • 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, with a proven track record of leading database initiatives within complex, large-scale environments;
  • Excellent knowledge of Java;
  • Expert knowledge of relational database management systems (RDBMS) such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle;
  • Working knowledge of NoSQL databases like DynamoDB, MongoDB and Redis;
  • Advanced SQL skills, including experience in stored procedures, query optimization, and complex data modeling;
  • Experience with cloud-based database systems (AWS);
  • Working knowledge of microservices architecture;
  • Knowledge of ORMs and database migration tools;
  • Proven track record in pushing the boundaries in performance tuning, query optimization, and systematic troubleshooting.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of infrastructure as code tools, like Terraform, CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience building platforms
  • Experience with Kubernetes
  • Experience in implementing and working with open-source databases and tools
  • Experience in implementing Data Governance policies
