The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Software Engineer with deep expertise in the Microsoft technology stack, .NET ecosystem, and Azure Cloud Services. This role sits at the center of our modernization efforts – helping build cloud-native applications, evolve legacy applications, and integrate emerging capabilities including AI-driven architectures, intelligent services, and automation frameworks.This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will guide engineering strategy, set coding and architectural requirements, mentor developers, and deliver high-quality, scalable solutions for the Casualty Software Engineering organization. You will partner with product managers, architects, developers, data teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to shape and deliver modern software solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Architecture
Lead the design and development of cloud-native, distributed systems using .NET, C#, Azure App Services, Azure OpenAI, Azure Functions, and Azure Container Apps.
Drive modernization of legacy applications into scalable, API-first, event-driven architecture.
Partner with enterprise and application architects to define architectural patterns, reference implementations, and best practices.
Evaluate and introduce opportunities to leverage AI/ML, LLM-based services, cognitive APIs, and automation to enhance product capabilities.
Conduct technical research and experimentation, producing proof-of-concepts, architectural documentation, and technical presentations.
Software Development & Delivery
Write clean, testable, maintainable code following engineering best practices, secure-by-design principles, and OWASP-recommended safeguards.
Build and maintain REST APIs, microservices, messaging/event-driven solutions (Service Bus, Event Grid), and data integration pipelines.
Develop SQL Server data models, queries, stored procedures, and integration logic.
Ensure code quality enforcement, observability, and strong automated test coverage in collaboration with DevOps teams.
Work closely with QA, DevOps, and SRE teams to ensure reliable deployments and monitoring.
Develop software using AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) to improve productivity, maintainability, and consistency while adhering to coding standards and security best practices.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
Provide hands-on guidance, coaching, and mentorship to developers of all levels.
Support career development through pairing, code reviews, and architectural walkthroughs.
Promote engineering excellence, continuous improvement, and team collaboration.
Stakeholder Collaboration
Work with product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
Provide effort estimates, help break work into milestones and sprints, and support delivery planning.
Communicate complex engineering concepts clearly in both technical and business contexts.
Requirements:
- 7+ years of experience in object-oriented software development using .NET and C#.
- 3+ years designing and building Azure cloud-native services (App Services, Functions, Containers, Key Vault, API Management, Service Bus, etc.).
- Proven experience building REST APIs, microservices, distributed architectures, and event-driven systems.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, including writing queries, designing schemas, and optimizing performance.
- Hands-on experience with front-end frameworks such as Angular, Vue, or React.
- Knowledge of secure coding practices, OWASP Top 10, authentication/authorization patterns (OAuth2, OIDC), threat modeling, and enterprise integrations.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions).
- Strong understanding of software design principles, design patterns, architectural documentation, domain-driven design (DDD), and secure architecture considerations.
- Ability to lead by example, write reliable code, conduct reviews, elevate team capabilities, and use AI-assisted development tools responsibly and effectively.
- Excellent communication skills and comfort level presenting to stakeholders.
Preferred
- Experience working with LLMs, AI-based services, or integrating Azure AI (OpenAI, Cognitive Services) into production applications.
- Prior experience in modernizing legacy applications and re-platforming systems to the cloud.
- Familiarity with messaging and eventing frameworks (Azure Event Grid, Service Bus, Kafka).
- Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (AKS, Container Apps).
- Leadership experience (2 - 4+ years) in guiding a development team.
- Experience with Agile methodologies, backlog grooming, and sprint planning.
