Marktplaats in The Netherlands, and 2dehands and 2ememain in Belgium, are part of Adevinta: a global online classifieds specialist. We offer businesses - of all sizes, from the smallest hobbyist to the biggest brands in Benelux - a platform to showcase their goods and services online to over 11 million monthly unique users.

What you’ll do & Who you are

About the team

You will join our Infrastructure & Developer Experience (DevEx) team in Amsterdam. The team is responsible for the reliability, scalability, security, and usability of the core platform that powers Marktplaats at scale. This includes cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, developer tooling, observability, and operational excellence for high-traffic, mission-critical systems.

You will report to a senior engineering leader and work closely with product, security, and application engineering teams across the organization.

We operate in a high-usage, always-on environment, take a data-driven and Agile approach, and continuously improve how engineers build, deploy, and operate software.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and manage an Infrastructure & DevEx engineering team, focusing on people development, delivery, and technical excellence.

  • Collaborate closely with product managers, architects, security, and application teams to align infrastructure and DevEx initiatives with company priorities.

  • With your team, own the technical and organizational roadmap for cloud infrastructure, platform reliability, and developer productivity.

  • Ensure our AWS-based infrastructure is scalable, secure, cost-effective, and highly available, supporting millions of users and high transaction volumes.

  • Drive improvements in CI/CD, observability, reliability, and operational practices across the engineering organization.

  • Guide teams through technical and organizational change, such as platform migrations, new tooling, or ways of working.

  • Balance short-term delivery with long-term platform sustainability, managing technical debt deliberately.

  • Act as a multiplier by coaching engineers and tech leads, fostering ownership, and raising the overall engineering bar.

  • Promote a strong DevOps and “you build it, you run it” culture, without burning people out.

Who you are

  • You have significant experience working with large-scale, high-traffic systems, ideally in consumer-facing or marketplace environments.

  • You have previous experience as an Engineering Manager (or are a senior tech lead clearly transitioning into engineering management).

  • You are comfortable leading teams through change, even when there is ambiguity or resistance.

  • You understand infrastructure and DevEx deeply enough to challenge technical decisions, without needing to be hands-on every day.

  • You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and can explain trade-offs honestly.

Core skills

  • Strong people leadership: coaching, feedback, performance management, and team growth.

  • Experience running and evolving cloud infrastructure (AWS) for high-usage websites or platforms.
Solid understanding of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software delivery.

  • Experience with reliability, availability, and incident management in production environments.

  • Proven ability to plan and execute complex projects, involving multiple teams and stakeholders.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Comfortable working in an Agile environment with frequent releases.

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform).

  • Familiarity with Kubernetes (K8s) and containerized platforms.

Bonus skills

  • Experience with observability tooling (preferably Datadog).

  • Experience with event-driven architectures and platforms like Kafka or RabbitMQ.

  • Background in platform engineering or developer experience teams.

  • Experience supporting marketplace or payment-heavy platforms.

Other skills

  • A strong engineering-enablement mindset: your success is measured by how effective other teams become.

  • Pragmatic decision-making: you know when “good enough” is good enough.

  • Ability to align teams around a shared vision, even across organizational boundaries.

  • A continuous-learning mindset and curiosity about better ways of building and running software.

A candid note

This role is not about being the smartest infrastructure engineer in the room. It is about setting direction, planning, enabling teams, making trade-offs visible, and keeping the platform reliable, and scalable while the business moves fast.
