About the role

Ready to shape the future of AI-powered search for millions of Marktplaats users? Excited about bringing more personalisation to our product than ever before? We're looking for a Senior or Lead Machine Learning Engineer to drive the next wave of innovation on our platform, leveraging the latest advancements in Machine Learning and Generative AI.

In this role, you will take ownership of the technical direction and quality of our ML solutions. You will lead the charge from ideation to production, working alongside a talented team of Data Scientists and ML Engineers to develop data products that create a seamless and intelligent user experience. Furthermore, you will champion engineering best practices within the team and collaborate closely with our Data Platform team to enhance our MLOps capabilities and accelerate our development cycles.

Key responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end lifecycle of ML/AI products that impact millions of users, from discovery and design through to deployment, monitoring, and maintenance.

• Develop and enhance core products such as our search engine, recommendation systems, and new Generative AI features.

• Lead the technical design of new solutions, setting high standards for code quality, model performance, and scalability.

• Establish and champion best practices in machine learning, including code reviews, testing frameworks, and documentation.

• Stay at the forefront of advancements in ML and Generative AI, evaluating and introducing new technologies to keep Marktplaats innovative.

• Collaborate with the Data Platform and product teams to evolve our ML infrastructure and tooling for greater efficiency and speed.

• Partner with Product Managers to shape the product roadmap, translating business goals into actionable technical strategies.

• Coach and mentor other engineers, fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement.

What we’re looking for

• 6+ years of professional experience in Machine Learning Engineering or a related Data Science role, with a strong command of Python.

• A proven track record of successfully deploying, monitoring, and maintaining machine learning models in a large-scale production environment.

• Demonstrated experience leading the technical design and development of complex ML/AI products.

• Deep understanding of core machine learning concepts (e.g., recommendation systems, NLP, search ranking, embeddings) and the fundamentals of Generative AI.

• A passion for engineering excellence, with experience establishing coding standards and processes that improve both quality and velocity.

• Hands-on experience with a modern data stack and MLOps tools (e.g., cloud platforms, containerization and workflow orchestration).

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Physics, or a related quantitative field.
